Life vest, life jacket, life preserver, floaty, whatever you call it, it only works if you wear it. This personal flotation device (PFD) is designed to keep you afloat if you ever find yourself in a large body of water where you can’t feel the floor. At Boat and Motor Superstore, we want you to be safe out there in the water. We are a boat trader who cares! It does not matter what body of water you are in Tampa, you need to make sure you are sporting a PFD. It can save your life.

The Best PFD is the One You Will Wear

Are you aware that 70% of all drowning involving canoes, kayaks, or rafts may have been avoided if the victim wore the appropriate life jacket? How about the fact that 9 out of 10 drownings occur in inland waters, most within a few feet of safety? You do not need to be in the middle of the ocean in open water to wear this. Drownings can happen anywhere.

Have you ever asked someone to wear a life jacket and they just roll their eyes and tell you they can swim? This happens all the time. It is a safe bet that most people out there in water know how to swim, but that does not mean they should not wear a life jacket. Going out on a boat or on a raft today you just look ignorant. You never know what can happen out there. Those who choose not to wear a life jacket are not cool, and they are not smart either. It is not only safe to wear a life jacket, but it also shows others around you that they should do it too. It can be the smartest decision they make while enjoying the water.

Personal Flotation Device

We know what you may be thinking. "Life vest are just plain ugly." That may have been true in the past, but times are changing. Life vest today actually can be quite stylish, comfortable, and very wearable. They come in various colors and styles. They also offer better features than the past that will increase your chances of rescue.

We have created a list for you that the US Coast Guard approves of. This list includes all the different types of PFD.

  • Type I - Offshore Life Jacket
  • Type II - Near-Shore Buoyant Vest
  • Type III - Flotation Aid
  • Type IV - Throwable Device
  • Type V - Special Use Device
  • Inflatable Life Jackets

What is Buoyancy?

Most adults only need an extra 7 to 12 lbs of buoyancy to keep their heads above water. A PFD can give that “extra lift”, and it’s made to keep you floating until help comes. Your weight is not the only factor in finding out how much “extra lift” you need in the water. Body fat, lung size, clothing and whether the water is calm or rough, all play a part.
