      • State: June 1- December 31 (excluding Franklin Wakulla, Taylor, Jefferson counties)

      • April 1- June 30 and Sep1- December 31 in state waters off of Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor, and Jefferson Counties

      • Federal: June 1- December 31 

  • Atlantic Regulations (state and federal waters unless specified: includes all state waters of Monroe County)


    • Minimum Size Limit 


      • 24” TL

    • Daily Bag Limit


      • 1 gag or black within the 3 grouper aggregate

    • Open Season: May 1- December 31


It Is Gag Grouper Season

What exactly is a gag grouper, and why is it so popular when it comes to fishermen? We are here to explain in more detail exactly what these fish are and how they live. Born as females but can later become male. Gag and red grouper are the most widely distributed of the Florida groupers. Goliath and Nassau grouper are protected from harvest in Florida waters. Spawn between January and May with some of the more tropical species spawning year-round. They feed on fishes and invertebrates. They can reach sizes up to 36 inches and up to 50 pounds, however, in most cases they are around 25 pounds. 


They reside in coastal waters near structure like rocky bottoms, reefs, and drop-off walls over 60 feet deep. 


Grouper fishing from a boat typically involves baits fished near the bottom, with heavy tackle and heavier to bring grouper to the surface. Live fish, dead cut, or whole bait are used. Grouper are very tasty meals.
