The Executive Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Eric Sutton, applauded and thanked Governor Ron DeSantis for approving the budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year and supporting initiatives that can help change the treatment of our wildlife. The budget will work to help fund high priority conservation projects like red tide research as well as coral reef disease response and restoration. People who support these projects and conservation items see this year’s budget as a solidification that Governor DeSantis is committed to making a positive impact and change to our environmental situation. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have stated how much they appreciate the Governor’s bold decisions and leadership when it comes to supporting these initiatives and efforts to make sure that safe and healthy ecosystems are maintained for fish and wildlife as well as residents of Florida and the thousands of visitors that come to the state each year.
The budget isn’t only going to be allocated to wildlife initiatives and projects, but it is also going to be used to support marine fisheries disaster recovery as well as the continued management of invasive species. In addition to the marine support and wildlife items funds were also provided to establish thirteen more sworn law enforcement positions so there can be an increase in patrol and public safety. The budget also included the Executive Order 19-12 called by Governor DeSantis, which transfers the Environmental Crimes Enforcement Unit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to the Department of Environmental Protection.
